Energy and water of Afghanistan

The 3rd national conference on water resources development and management of Afghanistan held past week. President Karzai and members of his cabinet attended and the issues of using the water resources optimally and investing on energy and water were discussed.

Muhammad Ismaeil the energy and water minister said currently a great volume of the country`s flowing water goes out of country due to not controlling them and only a small volume of these water are used in the country.

He added Afghanistan has 75 billion cubic meters water averagely and it can respond all requirements in energy production and agriculture fields if it is controlled.

Based on statistics Afghanistan has 8 million hectare of arable lands and all these lands can be cultivated

if the water resources are used appropriately. Also flowing waters in the country has the potential to produce 23000 Megawatt annually.

President Karzai called on international society help Afghanistan to build infrastructures and dams in the country. He also asked for more budgets for building dams and stated that Afghanistan can build some dams from it monetary resources to produce electricity.

Management of waters and using them better has been an important economic issue of the country. Afghanistan has great resources of ground water and above ground water which this potential can open a gate to invest in this field and help the country to grow in agriculture and become self-sufficient to produce electricity.
