Afghan Police Casualties Increased By 15 Percent: Sediqi

Afghanistan’s Interior Ministry says that the number of Afghan police officers killed and injured have increased by 15 percent.

“Unfortunately, 1,800 Afghanistan national police lost their lives to maintain security and to protect Afghan citizens,” this Afghan year that is due to end on March 20, ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said on Monday.

Sediqqi said more than 3,000 forces were also injured in the attacks in the same period.

“This shows a 15-per-cent increase in police causalities if we compare it with the previous Afghan year,” he added.

Over 3,600 attacks were carried out against police forces in Afghanistan this year, which is an increase of 13 percent compared to last year, Sediqqi also said.

In the meantime interior ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqi said militants also suffered heavy casualties during military operations conducted by Afghan police forces across the country during the current Afghan year.

He said at least 4,600 militants were killed, around 980 were injured and over 6,700 others were detained during the operations.
