Bahrainis to mark Feb. 14 revolution

Bahraini people have been called to hold anti-regime protests across the country on February 14 to mark the second anniversary of their revolution, Al-Alam reports.

The appeal was made by the opposition groups and revolutionaries in a statement on Tuesday.

The statement also called on Bahrainis to go on strike on Thursday and march to the site of the iconic Pearl Square, the former epicenter of Bahrain’s revolution, on Friday.

The coalition of Bahrain’s opposition groups, including al-Wefaq and the February 14 Revolution Youth Coalition, also urged the opponents of the regime to boycott shopping malls and banks in order to paralyze the economy.

The demand came as Bahraini people poured into streets in several regions on Tuesday night and staged peaceful protest rallies to show their opposition to the Al Khalifa regime.

The regime forces also fired poisonous tear gas canisters to disperse protesters in northeastern island of Sitra and al-Naeem district.

Bahrainis have been staging demonstrations since mid-February 2011, demanding political reform and a constitutional monarchy, a demand that later changed to an outright call for the ouster of the ruling Al Khalifa family following its crackdown on popular protests.

Bahrainis say they will continue holding anti-regime demonstrations until their demands for the establishment of a democratically-elected government and an end to rights violations are met.
