Pakistan Conditions for Afghan Peace Talks Unacceptable: Faizi

Aimal Faizai spokesman for President Hamid Karzai has said that Afghanistan will seek alternative ways towards the Afghan peace process if Pakistan is not prepared to assist the Afghan government.

While speaking during an interview with the AFP, Mr. Faizai denied the allegations by Pakistani officials who said that president Karzai is an obstacle in peace talks with the Taliban group.

Aimal Faizi insisted that president Karzai has visited Pakistan for several times in a bid to clarify the issue of terrorism which threatens both the nations.

Faizai said, “Violence and instability is noticed more on the other side of the border. Afghanistan is moving towards the right direction but the government of Pakistan has lost its influence against the terrorism.”

President Karzai’s spokesman also said that Islamabad is not interested in Afghan peace process by offering unacceptable conditions to encourage the Taliban militants in order to join peace talks.

According to Aimal Faizi, Afghanistan was hopeful to receive Pakistan’s cooperation for assisting Afghan peace talks until the trilateral summit was held between Kabul, Islamabad and London however Pakistan later changed its stance towards the Afghan reconciliation process.

He said, Pakistan urged us to end our ties with India and send our military officers to Pakistan for training purposes besides signing a strategic cooperation agreement with them however he said that India is one of the closest allies of Afghanistan and called the conditions of the Pakistan government as unacceptable.

Faizai, “The people of Afghanistan will not allow us to sign a strategic cooperation agreement with Pakistan since they are aware that the suicide bombers who are killing innocent Afghan civilians are coming from the other side of the border.”

This comes as the British Prime Minister office emphasized that the recent phone call between president Karzai and David Cameron was aimed at improving bilateral ties between Kabul and Islamabad.

Pakistan is considered to have a vital role in Afghan reconciliation process with the militants group in Afghanistan since the Taliban group leaders are based in Pakistan, Faizi said adding that if Pakistan is not willing to assist Afghanistan in this regard then the Afghan government will seek alternative ways to continue Afghan peace process.
