UNICEF Aids USD 68mn for Ministry of Education

A contract worth USD 68mn was signed between Afghanistan’s Education Minister Farooq Wardak and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) on Sunday, Wadsam reported.

According to Mr. Wardak, USD 33mn of the aid amount would be spent during the current academic year, while the remaining of the amount would be spent next year.

Minister Wardak said 70 schools would be built all across the country during the current year, 11 of which would be built in the northern regions of Afghanistan.

Ministry of Education had announced last year that no village and province in Afghanistan would be deprived of schools in the next two years.

Addressing the signing ceremony, Head of UNICEF in Afghanistan Peter Carolie said Afghanistan has witnessed an impressive increase in the number of female students attending schools in the past decade.

He added that UNICEF would make efforts to elevate education quality in Afghanistan.

He reassured the Afghan government that UNICEF would continue its assistance to Afghanistan after 2014.
