Salma Dam Explosion Foiled

Officials say security forces have foiled a major explosion plot on a water dam located in the western province of Herat.

Provincial governor spokesman, Mohiuddin Noori said on Sunday that Afghan intelligence – the National Directorate of Security – along with the Afghan National Army have seized nearly 1,500 kilograms of explosives from Chesht and Pashtun Zarghoon districts intended to be used to destroy the Salma water dam.

Noori said the explosives, which were among the most dangerous and destructive in its kind. He went on to say that investigations have begun in this regard.

Salma dam is located in Chesht district, 180 kilometers away from western Herat city and was due to be completed within three years by an Indian construction firm; however the project has been delayed because of the growing instability in the Herat province.
